We do not have the complete picture of what our work life will resemble as we go through the transition of returning to normalcy, and our city is in the unique situation that not many face – our ability to work and live in small spaces was our advantage and is now our obstacle.
Prior to the global pandemic employees and employers alike have searched for an efficient work/life flexibility. Architecture has played a role in perpetuating that vision. Office spaces continue to provide innovative ways for people to experience the work day – which results in less time at a workstation. The new normal will combine this flexible thinking with what we will continue to learn about our health and wellness in the workplace.

Various design solutions can be implemented based on a client or tenant’s individual needs during and as we progress through this moment in our work life

  • Design can become dynamic to provide current/future flexibility.

    • Workstations can be utilized more efficiently with smaller or less permanent workstations. Planning workstation density for future expansion.

    • This can allow persons to plug-and-play at a workspace, work remotely, or in private rooms depending on the day or task.

    • It can reduce the size of office space while still maintaining amenities and image.

    • Less workstations can be supplemented with additional private areas.

    • Most boardrooms are under-utilized and take up valuable square footage. With the continuing advancement of on-demand video call capabilities; the large boardroom could be turned into multiple – often coveted – breakout spaces.

    • Static spaces – such as toilet rooms, cafes, storage – can be designed on the peripheral to allow open spaces flexibility in use and for future growth.

  • Design becomes multipurpose.

    • Breakout rooms can have various purposes – can be single occupant one day and meeting space the next.

    • Material can help visually reflect capability and potential of space.

    • Heavy Traffic areas – hard surfaces (ie polished concrete / solid surface counters / antimicrobial paint.

    • Private spaces – enclosed (ie sound attenuative, floor to slab)

    • Less-Private Gathering/Breakout – soft and transformative (ie partitions open to air, no doors, curtain/fabrics/panels to set secluded ambiance)

  • Design becomes hands free.

    • More doors are automated (ie entry to demised space).

    • Faucets are sensor operated.
